In a letter to colleagues on Sunday, the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi wants the house to call on the vice president, Mike Pence to invoke the 25th Amendment for Trump’s removal.
The letter read in part, “…In protecting our constitution and our democracy, we will act with urgency, because this president represents an imminent threat to both. As the day go by, the horror of the ongoing assault on our democracy perpetrated by this president is intensified and so is the immediate need for action.”
Nancy Pelosi had told CBS News “60 Minutes ” on Sunday that even though there is strong support in Congress for impeaching the president a second time, she prefers the 25th Amendment because it gets rid of Trump, it removes him from the office.
Pelosi noted that under the 25th Amendment, the vice president and the majority of the cabinet can declare the president unfit for office, and the vice president becomes the acting president. She noted that impeachment is a lengthier process. First, the simple majority in the house must vote in favour of the charges. Then the Senate must hold a trial to consider the charges. For the president to be removed, two-thirds of its members must vote to convict.
